So, Everybody's Kitchen Looks Like This, Right?

I was tidying up a bit in the kitchen a couple of weeks back and started noticing a theme...





Bikes and trike parts and tools...









Wheel sets tucked into corners...





Brake parts about to disappear under the stove...





Floor pump (and an unrelated stock pot of shoes) by the litter boxes...





Sprocket clusters, spokes and hubs in trays...





And a frame, fenders, two rear racks (I found an old Pletscher under the faux leaves...) and frame pump with the cat food! I forgot the big toolbox that actually lives in the kitchen now, on a table by the microwave. It's full of bike bits and tools. Ah, hobbies. :)

An Itty Bitty Tweed Ride

Last night we went on an itty bitty Tweed Ride. It was hosted by a local bicycle advocacy group called the Johnson City Bike Party.

Here's the lot of us. All 17 and 1 dog. For a town with very few bicycle commuters, I'd say that was a decent turnout! And it was a good mix of people from a wide range of ages, skill levels and steed preferences. 

Which is how I found myself surrounded by recumbent trikes! Three, including my husband's. I'll admit to a bit of a fascination with the recumbent trikes, and find myself toying with the idea of getting one. Maybe... ;)  

It was a leisurly ride, about 7 miles with a couple of stops along the way and a quiet little after party at a local bakery. The ride went along at quite a slow pace. A bit too slow for me at times. Even on the Pashley. But it was a nice chilly night, good for poking along and chatting with folks without being out of breath. We met some new people, and a couple of ladies I plan to meet up with for some rides. It was also interesting to get a chance to ride the Pashley in an environment more closely resembling that which it was designed for, and it made me miss living "in town". As an "out in the sticks and up on a big hill" commuter it holds it's own, but it really shines as a city commuter. 

And while I was out with the group, I bought one of their tee shirts. What the heck, eh? :)

A Close Call

Today a friend of mine was hit by a motorist. He's ok, in the hospital with a broken collar bone, some road rash and bruises. It was a hit and run. So far nobody has come forward with any info or description of who hit him. So we are all just thankful that he is alive, and try to spread the word through social media in hopes that someone out there knows something. It's about all we can do.

Can You See Me Now? Part 1

I do a lot of night ridding. Mostly way out in the country. I've got some really bright lights on my bike, but I have had times when the battery in my taillight runs low and farmers would pull up beside me to tell me that they could barely see my light or me. And with the light being behind me, obviously it's hard to tell if the batteries are running low. So I've bought some SOLAS retro-reflective tape and put it on the rear fender on the Motobecane. I chose SOLAS because it's USCG approved (for watercraft and life vests) and figured that it would be good and waterproof. Also, if it's bright enough to see someone bobbing about in the ocean at night, surely it's bright enough to see a bicycle on a street.

So here's how it looks on the fender under the kitchen lights:




It blends in quite nicely with the fender! I cut three strips. A wider strip to go down the center between the two black lines, and two narrower strips for each side.

Here's how it looks with the lights off using the flash on the camera:




That's pretty bright! It reflects a lot more than the piece of reflective ribbon I've got tied on my bag. Now to take it out for a test run. See if I can get some pictures with car headlights shining on it.

Poor LIttle Neglected Blog

Yes, I know, I haven't posted anything since June! Things have been crazy busy around here, and because of that there hasn't been much to write about. Just the same ol' same ol' around here. ;)

I am working on a new crochet dressguard. This one is a custom request, and a design I haven't made before. I'll share some pictures once I have a chance to take some.

I've been going out on a lot of night rides lately, since that's about the only time I have to go ride just for fun. So I'll be writing about that soon. Also, I'm in the midst of The Great Reassembly project - putting my husband's Terra Trike back together.

So bear with me! New posts will be coming soon.

Pashley Princess Soverign - Little Over One Year Later

I've had my Pashley for a little over one year now. I thought I would share with you how she's held up living as an outside bicycle.

I was doing a little maintenance yesterday, and took some pictures of the wear and tear. Surprisingly there isn't much!



Some water gets to the stem and it's gotten a little rusty.




There's a little bit of grease oozing out at the fork bearing cups.




And some grease and grime at the headset.




I've scuffed up the rear fender from my U-lock.




The inticator chain has gotten rusty.




There are scuffs from the heel of my shoe on the seat post tube.




I've nicked the rear fender.




And there's something making a home around the rear hub.




This is the worst of the dings. I locked it up too close to the sign I lock up to at work. We had a big storm and the wind made the wheel whip around and the fork and fender scraped against the sign.







Overall, not bad for a daily commuter that lives outside!

DIY Rack Bungees

Just a quick little DIY. My rack bungees wore out. The elastic was all stretched out and weakened from sitting in the sun all day (no place shady or covered to park at work). I had these two flat bungees with hooks at the end (purchased at Home Depot or Lowes), and thought they would make great rack straps. I paired them up with these swivel hooks from the local feed and seed/ tack shop (replacement hardware for lead lines/ bucket hangers).







All you do is clamp them onto someplace on your frame, or a bracket if you happen to have one (the Pashley came with these handy brackets) and hook the bungees in!




Et voilà! "New" rack bungee. In bright blue. :)

Pigwidgeon and Her Bicycle

Pigwidgeon likes to sit on the Fuji. I say "her" bicycle because, well, she's always on it. Whenever I'm in the kitchen doing anything, she's right there. Hanging out on her bicycle. 

Sometimes she sits in the basket:

Sometimes she sits on the saddle, just observing...

But lately she has discovered chasing her tail from up high on the saddle: 

This makes cycling cat #2 in our house. Though, Tesla hasn't gotten to ride his Pashley since it went to live outside. Poor Tesla... 

The Goings On As Of Late

We're in the middle of prom season, and the beginning of wedding season, so I've been working tons of overtime, leaving me too brain dead. So here's a couple of weeks worth of what's been been going on.

Spring happened!










Which means there are lots of birds to taunt the cats.




Pigwidgeon took up residence in the Fuji basket.







I made a set of green dress guards for someone.








Which matched quite nicely with their bike.

I wore short shorts with leg warmers.




We took a detour.











And sunk in the gravel.

We saw ducklings.




And met a friendly spider.








And wore jaunty hats.




With hobbit shorts.

Discovered that, after removing the basket from the Pashley, it can actually, just barely, fit in the back of a Kia.





Which means that I can now haul it over to Kingsport to ride the Greenbelt. :)





Also, it looks naked without the basket.




And lastly, I can only manage Panda "boob shots" apparently...
